Disgusted with Cubs Start
The Cubs are off to a miserable start. In spite of ridding themselves of Sammy Sosa and a couple of other unhappy players, they still project the same personality. Most agree young pitching phenom, Carlos Zambrano, only needed to curb his temper in order to become a great player. On opening day, he was tossed out of the game after arguing with an umpire--so much for the success of the off-season counseling.
The Cubs scored 16 runs on opening day and got 23 hits. Immediately they started striking out and blowing games in the ninth and in extra innings. It may have been their shortest season ever; usually they don’t fold until June. They did not get a closer in the off-season and it looks like they will continue to go with LaTroy Hawkins who has proven he can’t do the job in either the American or the National league. Everyone seems to understand this but the Manager Dusty Baker. I hesitate to call Baker a manager. The dictionary says that a manager is one who directs a team or a player. It appears to me that Baker is more of a Public Defender and a Mother Hen. He seems oblivious of the mistakes his players make and constantly defends all their bad behavior to the press.
While with the San Francisco Giants, he won the Manager of the Year award three times. This must prove that with steroid loaded Barry Bonds on your team, any manager can look good.
