SAGE SOPH ON SCORING SPREE

Sage’s sophomore Trever Drake scored 43 and 44 points in consecutive games recently. I went to my files to check the magnitude of this scoring spree. Only four Monticello players have ever topped 44 points in one game. Ken Dixon set a school record in the 1966-67 season with 45 points. Jeff Bailey twice tallied 47 points in 1973-74. Shawn Fatheree established a new mark with 49 in the 1990-91 season. Craig Waldrup holds the current record for points in a single game with 51 in 1991-92.
Other significant scoring marks are as follows: Tom Eller 44, Fatheree 44 (twice), Fatheree 43 (twice), Waldrup 43, Eller 38, Waldrup 38, Fatheree 37, Eller 37, Thad Trimble 37, Matt Bennett 36, Kevin Jones 36, Eller 35 (twice), and Curt Stratman 35.
Surprisingly absent from the list are some of the all time school career scoring leaders. Jim Williams, who is second only to Eller in career scoring, had a high game of 34 points. Aaron Thais third all-time scorer had a best of 30.
Athough there isn’t a record available, I can safely say that Drake has the record for the most points scored in one game by a sophomore. He may be the only player to score 77 points in consecutive games— but I am not sure on that.

RATING THE ILLINI PLAYERS

The Big Ten season is almost here. I saw the Illini defeat hapless Coppin State last night. The Illini are unbeaten at 11-0 and are rated 6th in the USA Today/ESPN poll. This is better than anyone expected as they were ranked 17th at the beginning of the season.
My adjusted prediction for success is 29 wins and 6 losses. On November 19th I predicted a 27-8 season.
Here is the order that I rate the players at this moment.
1. Dee Brown
2. James Augustine
3. Rich McBride
4. Brian Randle
5. Jamar Smith
6. Marcus Arnold
7. Shaun Pruitt
8. Warren Carter
9. Chester Frazier
10.Calvin Brock

SAGES SOPHS LOOK GOOD FOR FUTURE
SAGES SOPHS LOOKING GOOD
It comes as no surprise that the Monticello boy’s basketball team has a strong sophomore class. Most of the group has been playing together with a lot of success since fourth grade. They were second in the state IESA basketball tournament in the seventh grade and had an outstanding record as eighth graders.
The class is very deep in basketball talent. Three are currently seeing a lot of varsity action and seven more play on the JV team.
At this writing, the varsity is 2-1 with wins over Rantoul and Rochester and a 72-61 loss to Mahomet-Seymour last week. Trevor Drake scored 17 points, Corbin Sebens 12 and Curtis Leischner 7 in the recent loss.
Nathan Swarts 6-5, Chris Kempson 6-3, and Jack Foley 6-4 give the JV team good size. Brent Rhodes, Matt Hunt, Cameron Magsamen, and Neal Phelps are the other sophomore members of the JV team. All ten will be fighting for playing time on the varsity in the next two years.
