SCOTT PHELPS BREAKS RECORD
DIKE STIRRETT’S 800 METER RECORD FALLS
Monticello junior Scott Phelps broke one of Monticello High School’s oldest track records. Phelps ran 800 meters in 1:56.l in the sectional meet and then lowered his new record in the state track meet prelims with a 1:55.47 clocking.
Dike Stirrett, a 1966 graduate, held the record at 1:58.6. Stirrett actually ran 880 yards but his time was adjusted to the slightly different metric distance.
Stirrett, who still holds the Sages 1600 meter record, went on to become a small college All-American at Eastern Illinois University. He continued running after college and was highly ranked USA marathon runner. Stirrett retired two years ago from teaching and coaching in the Champaign school district. A year ago he had to give up running because of an ankle problem, but does a lot of biking now.
Phelps won the sectional 800 meters and finished fifth in the state meet last Saturday in Charleston.
Monticello placed third with two relay teams. The team totaled 19 points and finished 12th in the state Class A meet.
The 4x800 Relay team consisted of Andrew Colbert, Joe Teems, Keith Butler, and Scott Phelps. The 4x400 Relay team consisted Charlie Corrie, Justin McPheeters, Scott Phelps, and Kevin Clark.
